EXTERNALIZE
Move state you keep re-remembering out of your head and into a persistent artifact like a ledger, checklist, or state board.
You're the one who holds the family's operational state in your head: the pediatrician follow-up, whose week it is for carpool, the gift for Saturday's party, the form due Friday. Twice this month something dropped, and the constant background rehearsal, re-remembering the same items over and over, is its own quiet exhaustion. Your memory is being used as a database, and it's a bad one.
EXTERNALIZE means moving state you keep re-remembering out of your head and into a persistent artifact. The cue: the situation requires holding many items, updates, or dependencies, and they keep getting lost or recomputed. Pick a carrier suited to the state: a shared checklist for the recurring items, a family state board on the fridge for who-what-when, a running log for decisions ("we told the school yes on the trip"). The selection rule: externalize specifically the state that is repeatedly lost or rebuilt, not everything you can write down. It works when state survives interruption, you return from a chaotic week and the board still knows where things stand, and coordination improves because others can now see what only you used to hold. The safeguard: don't create a maintenance burden larger than the memory burden it replaces; documentation nobody updates or reads is the failure mode.
