Ask where you sit in the whole spread, not against one summary number. Look at the range, the subgroups inside it, the tails, and how it shifts over time. A single average hides how much variation is normal.

Example
Instead of "the average 5K in my age group is 26 minutes, I ran 31," pull the full field: times run from 19 to 46 minutes, and half of finishers are over 29. You're mid-pack, not slow.
