REDEPEND
Map which tasks must come before which, so the real bottleneck and critical path stand out from the pile of visible work.
Your product launch has a 40-item task list, and the team is busily working the visible items. Yet the date keeps slipping, because everyone's grinding on tasks that don't matter yet while one unglamorous prerequisite, the security review, silently blocks six other things. A pile of work is not a plan; the order of necessity is.
REDEPEND means mapping which tasks must come before which, so the real bottleneck stands out. The cue: lots of tasks are visible but you can't say what's actually blocking what. Go through the list and mark each relationship: this must precede that, these must coexist, this one is optional, this one is substitutable, this one blocks everything downstream. Then trace the critical path, the chain of dependent tasks that determines the earliest possible finish. Prefer the dependency map that predicts where delay will actually occur. It works when one prerequisite or handoff emerges as the obvious next intervention, and suddenly half the busy-work reveals itself as premature. The caution: don't confuse habitual sequence with logical necessity. "We always do design before copy" is a custom, not a dependency, and treating customs as laws hides real slack in your schedule.
