Sort your ideas into their proper levels (goals above functions above mechanisms) so you stop comparing things that were never peers.

You sit down to think about your next decade and write a list: "financial freedom, learn Spanish, be a better parent, wake up earlier, meaning." Then you try to prioritize it and get nowhere, because the items aren't peers. "Meaning" is a goal, "be a better parent" is a function serving it, and "wake up earlier" is a mechanism three levels down. Comparing them is like ranking a country against a street address.

REHIERARCHIZE means sorting your ideas into their proper levels so you stop comparing things that were never on the same tier. The cue: items at different logical levels are sitting in one flat list being weighed against each other. Separate the entries into goals, the functions that serve those goals, the mechanisms that implement the functions, and the indicators that measure them. Test a couple of alternate nestings; sometimes "learn Spanish" is a goal and sometimes it's a mechanism for connection. It works when a contradiction dissolves because two items turn out to live on different levels: you were never choosing between meaning and waking early. Don't force everything into a strict tree, though; some things genuinely serve multiple parents, and neat nesting that erases those cross-links falsifies your map.
