Leaving your salaried job for freelance consulting feels like standing at a canyon edge: on this side, steady paychecks; on the far side, the work you want. Framed as one giant leap, the decision has been unmakeable for a year, because no amount of thinking removes the fall.

Phased path is an option form, a commitment structure where you break the commitment into stages and each stage must earn the right to the next. The cue is a large, mostly irreversible transition that keeps stalling because it is priced as all-or-nothing. Build it in three steps: define the stages (land two paying clients on nights and weekends; then negotiate down to four days and grow to half your salary in freelance income; then resign), attach an explicit gate to each stage, meaning the measurable result that unlocks the next one, and give each gate a time limit so a stage cannot quietly become forever. What visibly changes is that the canyon becomes stairs: you are always taking a step you can afford, and if a gate never opens, you have learned the market's answer cheaply while still employed. A phased path fits badly when the opportunity punishes slowness, such as a role that must be accepted whole now; phasing there is just declining in installments.
