Brittleness

Brittleness is when your whole setup rests on one login, one supplier, one person, or one rule, so the hour that single thing fails, everything stops.

You sell hand-bound notebooks on the side. Orders come through one Etsy shop, payouts land through one payment account whose password lives only in your head, and the linen thread comes from one small supplier in Portugal. On a Thursday you get an email saying your shop is suspended pending identity verification, sent to an address you stopped checking in 2023. Eleven orders freeze. Customers message. You cannot even refund them, because refunds run through the same suspended account.

Brittleness is a single dependency, outage, stale rule, or identity failure taking down the whole thing. The tell is that you cannot name a second path for any step: one account, one login, one supplier, one person who knows how it works. Unnoticed, it costs you the entire operation on a random weekday, and usually during the busiest week, because load is what breaks things. The smallest correction: list every step, mark each one that has exactly one path, and give the two most consequential a backup. Move the shop's contact email to one you actually read. Write the payment password somewhere your partner can reach it. Order thread from a second supplier once. You will not remove every single point of failure, and you should not try. If the whole thing is a hobby you could rebuild in an afternoon, brittleness is cheap and hardening it is wasted effort.
