The draft you sent your editor came back with margin notes, and your first instinct is to treat them as a punch list: accept, reject, done. But the notes keep circling one section where she senses a problem she cannot name and you sense a defense you cannot articulate. Trading tracked changes is not resolving it. The problem lives between your intent and her reading, and neither of you holds enough of it alone.

The operation: get in the same session, put the shared object between you, work it together while each side adjusts to what the other reveals, and let the result be something neither would have produced alone. When it works, the stuck section resolves in 20 minutes of talking that three rounds of comments could not have achieved. The spec's boundary is coordination cost: co-authoring a two-paragraph update with six people burns more than the artifact is worth, and using group work to assess individual mastery lets collaboration hide who cannot actually perform.
