COMPUTE / COMPARE

Let a tool calculate, sort, reconcile, or compare using explicit inputs and criteria.

Two loan offers sit on your kitchen table. One has the lower rate; the other has lower fees and a shorter term. You have read both twice and you are leaning toward the one whose paperwork feels friendlier, which you dimly recognize is not a financial analysis. The honest truth is that you cannot hold five interacting numbers in your head, and you are about to decide a five-figure question by vibe.

Compute or compare means letting a tool do the calculating, sorting, or reconciling, using inputs and criteria you make explicit. The cue is a decision that turns on arithmetic or on comparing options across several dimensions at once. The operation: write down the inputs, such as rate, fees, term, and prepayment penalties, define the comparison criterion, like total cost over the years you will actually hold the loan, then run it in a spreadsheet or calculator rather than in your head. When it works, the friendlier-paperwork feeling dissolves into a number: one option costs $2,300 less on your real timeline. The spec's warning is that computation can fake authority over what it cannot capture: choosing insurance by premium alone, or scoring a partner on a weighted spreadsheet, strips out exactly the factors that required judgment.
