NULL_INWARD

When focusing inward on your body is unwanted, destabilizing, or unsafe, refusing it is a valid answer; use an external, environmental, social, or practical route instead.

A well-meaning workshop leader tells the room to close their eyes, breathe deeply, and "drop into the body." For you, that instruction is the problem. Eyes closed, attention on your chest, you feel panic climbing, and everyone around you looks serene, which makes it worse.

NULLINWARD is the official permission slip most self-help never grants: refusing inward focus is a valid answer, not a failure. The cue: body-focused attention is unwanted, inaccessible, destabilizing, or simply worse than an external option for you, whether in a workshop, a meditation app, or your own head. The operation: decline the inward route without apology, then pick an outward one that serves the same goal, such as orienting to the room with eyes open, stepping outside to walk, changing something in your environment, asking a safe person to sit with you, or just handling a practical task. What changes: distress stops climbing, and you keep access to a support that actually works instead of white-knuckling one that doesn't. Do not use this as a blanket rule against all body awareness forever if some inward moves genuinely help you when chosen freely; the point is choice, and inward attention is never a moral requirement.
