Cobra Effect
The phenomenon where an incentive designed to solve a problem actually WORSENS it by creating perverse incentives: during British colonial rule in India, a bounty for dead cobras led people to BREED cobras for the bounty…
Unintended ConsequencesManagement & Organizations
Directly Responsible Individual
Apple's organizational principle that every project, task, or decision has ONE specific person who is the Directly Responsible Individual (DRI)—not a committee, not a team, but a single named person who owns the outcome
Organizational DesignCommunication & Persuasion
Third Story

Conflict ResolutionStrategy & Decision-Making
The Inertia Default
The tendency to maintain the status quo, stay in our comfort zone, and continue doing what we've been doing even when better options exist
Cognitive DefaultsGeneral Thinking
Default to Clarity
The communication discipline of choosing PRECISION and SIMPLICITY over impressive complexity—making your meaning unmistakable rather than impressive
Decision QualityGeneral Thinking
Safeguards
Pre-committed rules and procedures that protect decision quality when you're most vulnerable to poor judgment
Decision QualityGeneral Thinking
Self-Accountability
The practice of holding yourself to standards and commitments REGARDLESS of external enforcement—taking ownership of outcomes rather than attributing them to circumstances, others, or luck
Personal DevelopmentGeneral Thinking
Problem-Solution Firewall
The analytical discipline of keeping PROBLEM DEFINITION separate from SOLUTION GENERATION—ensuring that the problem is thoroughly understood and correctly framed before any solutions are proposed
Decision QualityStrategy & Decision-Making
Both-And Options
The strategic practice of rejecting false dichotomies and seeking solutions that achieve MULTIPLE apparently competing objectives simultaneously—integrating rather than choosing between competing goods

Self-Knowledge
The meta-cognitive capacity to accurately perceive one's own mental states, abilities, patterns, motivations, and blind spots
Personal DevelopmentGeneral Thinking
Self-Control
The capacity to override immediate impulses, desires, and emotional reactions in service of longer-term goals—the ability to choose delayed gratification over immediate reward
Personal DevelopmentGeneral Thinking

The Test of Time
The evaluative framework of assessing ideas, practices, strategies, and relationships by whether they've ENDURED rather than whether they're novel

Persian Messenger Syndrome
The tendency to punish the bearer of bad news, named after the ancient Persian practice of killing messengers who brought news of military defeat
Organizational PsychologyPsychology & Cognitive Science
Believe First and Doubt Later
Daniel Gilbert's research showing that the brain's DEFAULT response to new claims is to BELIEVE them—and that disbelief requires a SECOND, effortful cognitive step

The intense, disproportionate reaction to losing something—or being threatened with losing something—you already possess
Cognitive Biases & HeuristicsPsychology & Cognitive Science
